Children who have never been around horses are often intimidated by these large creatures or are perhaps curious but unsure about horses. The Intro to Horses class offers children the opportunity to observe and interact with horses. The class consists of one – two hour class where children can be near and touch a horse. Children learn the following:
- Stable and horse safety
- How to safely approach a horse
- How to halter and lead a horse
- Basic body grooming
- Checking in on one’s own comfort and stress level
The Intro to Horse Class is also an opportunity for staff to observe children and assess each child’s anxiety levels and readiness for additional programs. This helps CHAPS staff determine if a child could benefit from Equine Assisted Psychotherapy or Equine Assisted Learning before being placed into a Horse Care program.
All children must attend an Intro to Horses class prior to placement in an additional CHAPS programs.
