CHAPS currently offers the following programs to children under the supervision of the Bexar County Juvenile Probation Department:
- Intro to Horses
- Horse Care
- Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Equine Assisted Learning (EAGALA Model)
- Horse Camp
In 2015 program descriptions, objectives and standardized curriculums were developed for each of the above classes. Each program, except for the Intro to Horses class entails some form of additional outside reading and homework assignments and/or journaling. In 2016, measurement tools were identified and implemented in order to assess the effectiveness in meeting objectives as well as to assess the impact on children served.
CHAPs staff strive to provide meaningful and relevant experiences to children. Our ultimate goal is that each child walk away from CHAPS programs with a greater understanding of themselves, a greater sense of empathy for others, improved communication skills and a sense of healthy pride and accomplishment. Safety of the children, staff and horses is of highest priority. We work to ensure that each child feels comfortable and is ready for each program. We take the time to process emotions and feelings with each child and assist them in problem solving. We focus on personal growth, relationships and communication in addition to skill development.
We work to ensure that each horse is well exercised and conditioned but also healthy and rested for each program. Horses have unique personalities and also have “off” days. Just as we don’t want to push a child too hard, neither do we want to push a horse too hard.
Please take some time to review our programs and classes.
